A major solo exhibition of Robert's new work:
"Robert Davidson: The
Abstract Edge"
Opening Tuesday, June 22, 2004 at the UBC Museum of Anthropology
Closing January 30, 2005 before beginning a tour organized
by the National Gallery of Canada.
Organized by UBC Museum of Anthropology and curated by Karen Duffek, Curator
of Art.
A 64-page catalogue will be published in English and French to accompany the
exhibit. It will contain essays by Karen Duffek and Robert Houle, as
well as photographs of works in the exhibit.
The exhibit will feature new works by Robert Davidson, as well as works dating
back to 1983, in which he explores concepts of Haida abstraction. There
will be about 30 works in the show, including paintings on canvas, paper, and
deerskin drums; sculptures and low-relief carvings in cedar; and three new aluminum
sculptures. As well, several 19th-century bentwood dishes, whose abstract
compositions inspired Robert's inquiry, will be borrowed from North American
museums for this exhibit.
